HOUSTONHouse Speaker Nancy Pelosi was at the Port of Houston Monday, touting jobs she credits to President Barack Obamas economic stimulus package.

Nearly $100 million of the stimulus went to the Port of Houston, which is the largest U.S. Port involved in foreign commerce.

Pelosi and other Democrats said the federal aid helped create more than 3,000 jobs.

"While some in the other party would like to say that it created no jobs, it hasnt deterred others of their party to go around at ribbon cuttings, groundbreakings, holding giant checks for the resources that are coming into their communities to create jobs," Pelosi said.

But Republicans said those jobs came with a hefty price tag.

"So overall, people know in this country that the stimulus bill has not worked. It has not created the jobs to the extent that it claimed it would," said Houston Congressman Ted Poe, a Republican. "So hopefully, the administration will not move forward and create a second stimulus bill."

The $100 million from the stimulus bill was spent on dredging in the ship channel. A port spokesperson said the stimulus money is creating jobs in dredging and dock work.
