Many recent events have people across America questioning the motives of the United States government as they have repeatedly acted to protect the rights of illegals over those of the American people. The widely publicized case of Texas Border Agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean, have left most of us wanting to know whose side our government is really on. As Americans, we believe injustices such as these cannot occur in our country and when they do, we expect the powers that be to step in and right that wrong. While hundreds of thousands of Americans and many Members of Congress have spoken out and demanded answers, we have received little explanation from our government.

Over the past year, illegal immigration and border security have been in the national forefront shaping the political platforms for politicians nationwide. And as a fifth generation Texan, these issues are not new to me. But this is not a Republican or Democrat issue, this is an American issue a red, white, and blue issue. It is important to understand that these issues are not one-in-the-same, we can not end illegal immigration with out first addressing border security.

I have been to the Texas-Mexico and California-Mexico border numerous times. I have met Texas Border Patrol agents and Texas finest sheriffs and they all have the same thing in common love for our country and a desire to protect and serve. Unfortunately, law enforcement across the board has been dealt a devastating blow with the governments prosecution of their fellow officers for what appears to me as doing their job. Whats more concerning to me is the effects this will have on border security. How do we ask these men and women to put their lives on the line for a country that will not stand behind them? From this point on, every lawman along the border or in the heart of America who encounters an illegal committing a crime will hesitate before acting. This is not only a serious threat to the safety of the officer, but a serious threat to the safety of the citizens of our country.

I have been quoted time and time again saying that I believe the United States Government is on the wrong side of the law when it comes to securing our borders and enforcing our immigration laws. Its a sad day in America, when the civil rights of an illegal dope dealer have more value than those of the men sworn to uphold our laws. That was exactly the case in the prosecution of Texas Border Agents Ramos and Compean. The word of a Mexican National, who was smuggling in over $1 million worth of dope, was given more credence than federal agents in a United States Court of Law.

Unfortunately this is not an isolated incident. The US Attorneys office is also responsible for the prosecution of Texas Sheriffs Deputy Gilmer Hernandez for violating the civil rights of an illegal human smuggler that attempted to run over him. In a third case, Texas Border Agent David Sipes was prosecuted for using excessive force in apprehending an illegal along the border. Sipes was granted a new trial after the court learned that the federal prosecutor withheld evidence that was beneficial to his defense. Fortunately for this young man, justice was served and he was found not guilty.

Why does it seem our Federal Government is so zealous in prosecuting border agents who appear to be doing their job and give those who illegally enter the United States a free pass? There is a border war going on in our country and our government not only seems to turn a blind eye to it, but they seem to be on the side of the enemy. Because our immigrati
