CONGRESSMAN POE COSPONSORS PHOTO ID SECURITY ACT

Closes Loophole Allowing Alternate IDs in Opening Financial Accounts

WASHINGTON, DC Congressman Ted Poe (TX-02) cosponsored H.R. 1314, the Photo Identification Security Act. This legislation closes the federal loophole created in the Patriot Act that allows for financial institutions to accept alternate forms of identification when opening accounts or obtaining credit cards.

This bill will require that any official business with the federal government or financial institutions accept one of these forms of identification: Social Security card with a government-issued identification card, including state driver's licenses; U.S. or foreign passport; or U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Photo Identification Card. Mexican government-issued Marticula Consular Cards are not accepted.

It is important that we send a clear and universal message on where we stand on illegal immigration, said Poe. We cannot attempt to hold employers who knowingly hire illegals accountable when some of our financial institutions take advantage of a loophole to cash in on the illegal underground economy. We must work with the banking industry to maintain the integrity of our laws and provide strict guidelines on acceptable and secure identification policies.
